Beyond Meat Comes to the KC Area
Big news, local veg*ns – this *much* hyped new vegan chicken substitute is now available in the KC area. Beyond Meat announced that today is the debut of their new faux chicken product in the Rocky Mountain region – which happens to include the Whole Foods on 119th Street. It’s only available via their prepared foods case for now – you can’t just buy a package of the stuff – but, hey, it’s a good excuse not to cook for one meal, right? I’m looking forward to checking Beyond Meat out as soon as possible. Let me know when you do, too!
My Kansas City: Amber Shea Crawley
Local raw/vegan cookbook author Amber Shea Crawley was featured in Ink Magazine’s My Kansas City column this week. Local vegans are probably familiar with her choices for dining out, but this is great exposure for Amber and her cookbook, and a little added publicity for some Vegan KC favorites, new and old.
5 Vegan-Friendly Towns on Our Radar
Just catching this one now, but in April VegNews.com noted that Kansas City is one of five US cities that’s an “up and coming veg destination.”
Charles Ferruzza’s Brief Veggie Past
The Pitch’s long-time restaurant critic fesses up to his past as vegetarian (vegan?) waiter in an Indianapolis macrobiotic restaurant.
Pitch Reviews Cafe Gratitude
I have to say I agree on the coconut bacon – it tasted more like an odd, sweet, mayo-based salad (ala tuna- or egg-) to me, but I’m looking forward to checking out the rest of their menu soon.
Have you been to Cafe Gratitude since it opened in KC? What are your thoughts?
St. Patrick’s Day is tomorrow, and for most of Kansas City that means canceling all plans for the day and heading out for the parade. And even those who don’t make it to the parade end up spending their night on the hunt for green beer and good times.
Don’t forget that not all booze is vegan, despite being free of obvious meats and dairies – Guinness and many other beers are clarified with isinglass, a fish-based gelatin. So if you want to stick to you vegan druthers, be sure to check out Barnivore to suss out your ethical options before heading out tomorrow night!
Have fun and be responsible, and if you find any great vegan Irish treats out in the wild, would you let us know?
Jamba Juice has a vegan menu say what?!?!
Of course, they’re still not in Kansas City so this isn’t of much help locally – but something to keep in mind on the road!
Why did I not know this existed?! Jamba Juice, I don’t despise you and your smoothies anymore
Sorry for the radio science, folks – illness and a fabulous Hawaiian vacation have kept things shuttered around here for the last month. I have visits to some new spots promising vegan options planned in the coming weeks, but in the meantime check out this article from Pitch’s Fat City blog, noting some Kansas City vegan restaurant history as well as some promises from Heidi Van Pelt-Bell about new outlets for Fud’s great food:
